Learning about refugee issues
This mushroom farm was built in the summer of 2017 by a youth group with machetes in hand, working side by side with their Kareni peers in the mountainous jungle to build a mushroom hut. The
Kareni people live as refugees with no citizenship. Parents must go to the cities to work illegally and children are left in the community with few adults to oversee them.
The money gained by selling the mushrooms will be part put back to buy seed for the next crop and fund learning materials for the school. The rest will be distributed to families so they can buy food and other essential items. This new mushroom hut brings income and opportunity for the village, keeping families together.
